June 17, 2009 - This past March, as you were watching March Madness on CBS, you probably noticed a new studio host for that network's coverage. Former UNLV star Greg Anthony worked with Greg Gumble and Seth Davis on that most informative set. Anthony took the place of Clark Kellog, who is now the lead analyst with Jim Nance at game sites. Greg Anthony was the point guard on the UNLV team that beat Duke in the 1990 NCAA championship game, and then lost a heartbreaker to Duke the following year in the championship game. Anthony also carved out a very fine 12 - year NBA career as well. Anthony worked several years as a studio analyst for ESPN coverage of the NBA. In this interview with Terry Sisisky, you will hear how excited he was last March and April to be on the set with CBS for their coverage of one of the biggest sporting events of the year, the NCAA men's basketball tournament.... Here is that interview... (CLICK HERE TO LISTEN)

June 17, 2009 - Later this year, Petersburg High School will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the school's state championship team in 1979. The late Norman Jenkins was the head coach of the Crimson Wave, and he had a star studded lineup that year, featuring players like running back Brian Smith, and linebacker Ricky Hundley. The decade of the 1970's was a great period for Wave football. On a recent trip to St. Louis, to visit his beloved Cardinals, Terry Sisisky met with former Petersburg High star running back Terry Houston, now a principal at Roosevelt High School in St. Louis. The 50 year old Houston has been the principal since 2006. In the fall of 1976, Terry Houston rushed for 1,266 yards for the Wave, and was the Central District player of the year. He was first team all district and first team all regional back in 1976. Terry Sisisky caught up with Houston a recent trip to the "gateway city”, and talked with Houston about his journey from Petersburg, Virginia to Virginia State University, and now, as a principal at Roosevelt High in St. Louis, Missouri... All of the Petersburg Generals home games and all home games for the Petersburg Post 2 American Legion team will be played at the Petersburg Sports Complex through the first week in August. Harry Marsh, the former sports editor for the Progress-Index, is the new business manager for Petersburg American Legion Post 2, and Terry Sisisky had a chance to sit down and talk with Mr. Marsh about the return of American legion ball back to Petersburg, and the team's working relationship with the Petersburg Generals.. May 28, 2009 - For the second time this spring, a member of the Thomas Dale high School girls' basketball team has made a verbal commitment to a college.... On April the 28th, Kalia Johnson made a verbal commitment to Duke University. Johnson still has two years left at Thomas Dale. Last week, junior Alyssa Frye made a verbal commitment to attend the College of Charleston. According to her father, Clinton, after visits to five different schools, it was on the second visit to Charleston when Coach Wilson offered Alyssa the scholarship....Coach Wilson feels like Alyssa Frye can be an impact player for their program. Here are the stats for Alyssa Frye for her just concluded junior year....Frye averaged 14.5 points a game, 3 assists, and 3.3 steals a game. Next year, the Thomas Dale girls basketball team figures to be one of the top teams in the central region with the return of both Kalia Johnson, and Alyssa Frye.

May 20, 2009 - The Miami Dolphins made an incredible turnaround last year. In 2007, it was the Dolphins finishing at 1-15. This past season (2008), the Dolphins won the AFC East division title with an 11-5 record. Miami won the division on the final day of the regular season with a win over the New York Jets at the Meadowlands. One of the key components on the Miami defense was former Petersburg High School star Kendall Langford. The 2004 PHS graduate ended last year with 31 tackles, 25 of them solo tackles. He also had two quarterback sacks. Langford's senior season at Hampton University saw him record a team high 72 tackles, and 13.5 tackles for losses. On Friday, May the 15th, Terry Sisisky had a chance to talk with Kendall Langford at the Petersburg Sports Complex, about his rookie year with the Dolphins, and about life in the National Football League (NFL). May 5, 2009 - If you are like me, meaning a huge baseball fan, you will basically go to any length to see your team in action. If your favorite team resides in the National League, you might make the trip up interstate 95 north to see them play at nationals park in Washington, D.C. make no mistake, it can be very frustrating getting to DC or Baltimore, even if you leave early in the day. Last Thursday, that was April the 30th, I made that trip to DC to watch the cardinals versus the Nats. The trip, with a friend John Doane, from Hopewell was pleasant for a while. Then came your traffic delays due to construction, maybe an accident, and if you drive to see a game in Washington, or Baltimore from the Richmond area, you know it can be very frustrating. There are times when I get to DC that I feel like I just went through a washing machine, very stressful at times. But there was a payoff for me on April the 30th, one, as a Cardinals' fan, I will never forget. John Doane, from Hopewell, is a man who tapes weddings, proms, and even school reunions.... Mr. Doane happened to have met the manager of the Cards, Tony Larussa, in the month of March here in the Richmond area. Doane asks me if I wanted to meet Mr. Larussa, and at first, I thought he was just kidding. As it turned out he was not kidding. Mr. Doane has his cell number and calls Larussa at the park. Larussa answered and says to meet him at the dugout at a certain time. We go down to batting practice, get near the field, and John Doane gets him to come over to the dugout. That is when my world turned upside down. I got to meet Tony Larussa, I was pretty nervous, I really do not know why, but I was. He did shake my hand, he was very nice, and I thanked him for bringing me a world series title in 2006, as if it were my World Series trophy. The get together lasted only a few minutes, but I felt like an 11 year old little leaguer. I will remember meeting the manager of the cards that night, and will remember John Doane giving me the opportunity to meet with one of the great managers of all time. It is not often that you get close to the dugout of a major league team, but there I was, meeting the manager, and spotting the great Albert Pujols just a few feet away.....For those five minutes or so, I did not have a care in the world. The game lasted over three hours, then back to the car, and reality set in. It was a long drive back; I got home about 2:00am after dropping off Mr. Doane in Hopewell, Virginia. And yes, there were traffic problems going back to Richmond, and not even bad traffic at mid night could ruin this day for me. Here is a picture of my trip to the National’s Park. Hope you can to a game sooner than later.......

April 29, 2009 - There have been a lot of great moments in the history of the tradition- laden Dinwiddie High School baseball program. A lot of great players, great coaches, and always competitive in the central district, you can add another great moment to their program.... On Tuesday, April the 28th; the Generals beat Colonial Heights at Shepard Stadium. That was not the big story. That belonged to sophomore shortstop Nick Christopher, who hit two grand slams in the game. Not one, but two grand slams, one in the 4th inning and one in the top of the 6th inning. Mike Christopher, Nick's father, played and starred at Dinwiddie back in the early 1980's.....Mike was coaching first the other night when his son hit the two grand slams. After the game, Terry Sisisky spoke with Nick Christopher about his once in a lifetime effort at Shepard Stadium on the night of April the 28th, 2009... (CLICK HERE TO LISTEN)

April 28, 2009 - Last Saturday afternoon, at Varina High School, the group called, "Assist Student Athletes" sponsored the second annual Women's Senior High School All Star game. Some of the players that were there included: Elaine Derricot of Henrico High, Tamara Nesmith from Matoaca, Ashley Whitaker from Petersburg, Rashida Scott from Thomas Dale, Marcia Bogans from Huguenot, Crystal Smith from Meadowbrook, and Brianna Dillard from Hermitage. Elain Derricot was named the MVP of the first of two all star games played that day at Varina High. As it turned out, one of the best high school players in central Virginia was there and she was the clock operator for the first all-star game. Miss Kalia Johnson, a rising junior from Thomas Dale High School, had a big smile on her face. And why not? The day before, April the 24th, Miss Johnson had made a verbal commitment to play for Duke University. Her dad was on hand to officiate the first game that day and he was as proud as any parent could be. TerrySisisky.com had a chance to chat with Miss Kalia Johnson last Saturday, and she talks about her last two years of high school, and the decision to commit to Duke University before her junior season starts... April 27, 2009 - It was back in November of 2008 when Petersburg High School senior Cadarian Raines signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Hokies of Virginia Tech. Now, six months later, another Petersburg High School senior will be playing NCAA division one basketball. It was April the 23rd ,2009, when senior Drejon Scott signed a letter of intent to play with New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey. The New Jersey Institute of Technology is now a member of the newly formed "Great West Conference", and Drejon Scott will be part of that for the next four years. Scott, who averaged 13.7 points a game at Petersburg this past year, also led the team in three point field goals made with eighty-six ...Scott also scored exactly one-thousand career points at Petersburg High. His best performance in the 2008-2009 season was his 36 point explosion versus Prince George on January the 16th, as he made ten three pointers in that game. Last week, Terry Sisisky sat down with Drejon Scott, and talked about his senior season at Petersburg, and his decision to go to the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Scott becomes the second Petersburg High School player from this year's team that will play division one basketball this fall and winter ... (CLICK HERE TO LISTEN)

April 14, 2009 - I am almost 57 years old, and even at this age; I am still excited about opening day in baseball. On Monday, April the 13th, R. Ronnie Lanier and I made the trip up 95 north to the nation's capitol to see the Nationals' home opener versus the champion Philadelphia Phillies. We got to the ball park right around 2:00pm and settled into our seats, high, but you could see the entire field. It was time for a restroom stop, then off to the concession stands, for a couple of dogs and chips, and a couple of soft drinks..... My day turned upside down as I was going into the restroom. There was a person on a cell phone that I overheard, and it sounded like he said, “Harry Kalas died? ". Of course, if you are a baseball fan, you know who Harry Kalas was. So, I looked at the man, dressed in Phillies gear, and asked him, “Harry Kalas, passed away? " The man on the cell phone did not respond. It looked like he was in shock. If you are a Phillies fan, or just a baseball fan, you knew Harry Kalas. You knew his voice. You knew him from the national football league and play by play of Sunday afternoon football on Westwood One. Kalas was a giant in the broadcasting industry. So, here I am, hearing something from a fan, but not hearing yet on the radio. When I go to a baseball game, I usually carry a small transistor to the game, and listen to the play by play as the game is going on. Baseball play by play fits radio more than any other sport. The great ones, like Kalas, paint the picture. So, I turn on the radio to WTOP radio, an all news station out of DC, and hear the report that Harry Kalas had collapsed in the press box, two hours before the game, was rushed to a local hospital, and died. There was a moment of silence before the game started. After that moment of silence, you could hear a fan yell. “We love ya, harry.” That was not inappropriate, because, believe me, all Phillies' fans would have yelled, "We love ya, Harry” if they would have been at the Nationals' park yesterday. WTOP's lead stories on sports updates yesterday afternoon were all about Mr. Harry Kalas. The tributes kept pouring in, and the reporter from the park, Mr. Craig Heist, gave scores on the game from the press box, and Heist sounded subdued and reminded listeners on the radio, that the game took a backseat to what had happened earlier in the afternoon. It was opening day, but it did not have that glorious day at the ball park. Last Thursday afternoon, I visited a radio client, Mr. Kevin Thomasson, who owns a business in Colonial Heights. Kevin is a huge Phillies fan, and when I saw him last week, he was showing me a lot of Philly stuff from last year's World Series' run. And then he dialed his cell phone, and when the phone rang, you could hear this, "Swing and a miss, struck him out, the Philadelphia Phillies are 2008 World Champions of baseball.” That was the play by play call of Harry Kalas describing the last out of the 2008 series for the fightin’ Phils. Kevin will have that greeting the rest of his life. I also heard that same cell phone message from Mr. Wes McElroy, the popular talk show host at sports radio 910 in Richmond, Va. ...Needless to say; a lot of Philly fans have that call on their cell phones. The game did go on as scheduled, as the Phillies outlasted the Nationals 9-8 on Monday, April the 13th... Lot of great plays in the field, a lot of home runs in the game. But there was still an empty feeling in the stadium. It was not your "normal opening day at the ball park"... Believe me when I say, for at least yesterday, for all Phillies fans, the final score did not mean a thing. There will be tributes all day today on Philly radio stations. Players come and go, but in Philadelphia, Harry Kalas stayed for close to forty years..... He was the Phillies, and now the fans will show their appreciation, and that is the way it should be in the city of brotherly love. ....

April 6, 2009 - 24 of the finest senior basketball players in central Virginia laced up their sneakers for the 6th annual 804 all star game. The game was held Saturday night April 4,2009 at Matoaca High school. Terry Sisisky stepped away from his usual play by play duties to be the public address announcer for the evening. The game featured such notable players as Antone Exum (Deep Run), Darrien Brothers (Benedictine), Cadarian Raines (Petersburg), and Doug Brewer (Meadowbrook). The game was for some the last time to play in front of a home crowd.
The game started with a three point contest. The two finalists were the hot shooting guards Drejon Scott of Petersburg and David Brown of Huguenot High School. After three rounds David Brown emerged the winner by a single point over Scott. Next up was the dunk contest. It was thrilling. Two of the judges were Brandon Rozzell of VCU and Harold Deane Jr. formerly of Matoaca High School and University of Virginia. The two finalists were Chris Evans of Petersburg and Josh Brinkley of Douglas Freeman. After three rounds the score was tied. It was very close but Chris Evans emerged as the dunk contest winner.
The game also featured all star cheerleaders organized by Ms. Pam Hyndman. There was also a fund raiser for Ms. Kionna Jones a Hopewell High School student who is confined to a wheelchair from a gunshot wound. Coach George Lancaster was given an award for his tireless work to help young people on and off the basketball court. The day also happened to be the birthday of Coach Lancaster and senior participant Josh Brinkley. They were presented a cake by Mr. A. Wilson the organizer of the 804 all star game.
The 804 all star game featured the North versus the South. The South team started with a bang. Cadarian Raines won the tip. His team mate Drejon Scott gets the tip and then throws a alley oop pass to Raines for a dunk. The North misses their first shot. Drejon Scott comes down court and hits a 3 pointer from the top of the key. The game went back and forth the rest of the way. In the end the combination of Josh Brinkley, Natwan Young, and Darrien Brothers on the inside and the outside shooting of Xavier Parham and Randall proved to be the difference. The biggest difference maker of them all was Darrien Brothers. He scored 27 points in a variety of ways to lead the North all stars to a victory with the final score 113 - 99. For his efforts Darrien Brothers was named the games MVP. He has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Richmond next school year. April 6, 2009 - It was a packed house at Matoaca High School on Saturday night, April the 4th, 2009 for the 6th Annual 804 High School All-Star Game. The All-Star game featured central region Virginia high school seniors from Petersburg, Highland Springs, John Marshall, Douglas Freeman and other high schools in the 804 area code in the state of Virginia. One of those all-stars was 6ft 4in center Jake Eastman out of Douglas Freeman High School. Jake Eastman also participated in the three point shooting contaest that was held earlier in the evening. It was a big night for Jake because his dad, Kevin Eastman was in the stands to watch him play. Why was that so special? Well, dad Kevin is an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics and as an NBA coach, he is on the road a lot. After the game, Terry spoke with Kevin Eastman, a former player for the University of Richmond, former collegiate coach at UNC-Wilmington, Washington State University and at Belmont Abbey College. Here is the interview with Coach Eastman who talks about being on the bench last year when the Celtics won their record 17th NBA title and about following his son’s career… (CLICK HERE TO LISTEN)

CLICK HERE FOR PHOTOS OF THOMAS DALE vs DINWIDDIE BASEBALL(04/01/09)!!

April 1, 2009 - The first high school baseball broadcast on TerrySisisky.com could not have been scripted any better. You never know what you might see when you go to a game, and that is the beauty of any sporting event. Thomas Dale at Dinwiddie, two of the best in the central district. Dinwiddie County fans love their baseball.  Great stars of the past, like Kevin Morgan, Todd Morgan, Adam Morgan, and Mike Christopher, just to name a few.  It was a rather ho hum game for five innings, Dinwiddie leading 6-2, and it looked like the game was in the bank. Lefty Dustin Harriss, from Dinwiddie, had things in control, allowing only two runs on four hits through the first five innings.  Easy win, right?  Not really. Baseball can be a cruel game. Harriss allowed three hits, two bloopers that fell in and then the Knights' Tyler Burnette whacked a two run single to make it 6-4 Dinwiddie.  Chris King came in to relive, got the last two outs, and Dinwiddie still had the lead.  Top of the 7th, 6-4, and Thomas Dale's last at bat.  Super hitter Bill Cullen, got hit by the pitch on an 0-2 count to start the 7th. With Cullen running on another 0-2 pitch, Taylor Britt singled to left in the area vacated by the Generals shortstop covering second on the steal attempt.  Ryan Carter singled to make it a 6-5 ball game.  Then a walk loaded the bases.  Ryan Moore ht a deep fly ball to center, scoring the tying run from third.  Just like that, the Knights had come back from four down.  Then, Tyler Burnette steps up, runners and first and third, and he checks his swing, the ball hits the aluminum bat, just gets over the pitchers head, and Ryan Carter scores from third.  The Knights had come all the way back from nowhere to grab an improbable 7-6 lead.  How about the emotions of both teams at that point?  It looked like Dinwiddie had the game in hand, and then it looked like Dale was ready for a great come from behind win.  The Generals lead off batter in the bottom of the 7th inning ( last scheduled in high school baseball ), struck out.  So, nobody on base, and only two outs to play with.  Chris King reached on an error, Nick Christopher singled to center, and that put runners on first and second, one out.  Then Trey Davis, a left handed hitting junior for the Generals, lined a double down the left field line, to tie the game.  Second and third, one out, and Thomas Dale walks Kurt Jones to load the bases.  Up to the plate comes junior second baseman Chip Baskerville, who lines a single over the center fielder's head, and that scored sophomore Nick Christopher, giving Dinwiddie the victory, and sparking a celebration at the plate.  It as amazing, from an announcer's viewpoint, to see the ebb and flow of emotions in the 7th inning, alone.  Just when you thought one team had the game, it went the other way. I know this was not a big time major league game in front of 50,000 fans, but for the fans who made their way to Dinwiddie High School on march the 31st, it was a game they will not soon forget..... Keep up with more high school baseball play by play as the month of April continues to unfold...........

March 24, 2009 - Let me state for the record that I am a huge baseball fan. I am a big Cardinals fan. Have season tickets to the Washington Nationals. Love to get off work early, drive to the nation's capitol a little early and avoid that nasty drive time traffic. The World Baseball Classic does not move me, I can take it or leave it. I do not like World Series games starting as late as they do, so I just fall asleep and get the highlights the next day. If the Cardinals are playing in the World Series, I will stay up as late as I need to do, but other than that, you have lost me after 10PM. I know baseball people do not care whether I watch or not, but they should care. I am getting old, so baseball will always appeal to me. But to the younger generation, can you spell NFL? I want to talk about a trip I made to Charlottesville on Sunday, March the 22nd, 2009. My daughter goes to the University of Virginia, I am proud of her, and I get a chance to see some games with her. On March the 22nd, I went to the Virginia versus Miami series finale at Davenport Field. A lot of sun that day as I sat in the bleachers beyond the left field fence and had a ball. Hot dogs, peanuts, chips and soft drinks, they had it, I ate it (so much for the diet these days). This day was about getting away, sitting in the sun, forgetting all of your problems for a few hours. There were a ton of fans, and a lot of children sitting in the grassy area down the left field line that made it look really neat. Imagine, young children at a baseball game. The game between UVA and Miami of Florida drug on, and on, and on, and even longer. I took my transistor radio to the game, I love to listen to a game while sitting in the bleachers. I am listening to the announcers talking about a time limit on this game because the Canes had to catch a flight from DC back to Florida. The game started at 12 noon, so it looked like we could get in 9 innings before 3:30pm. But as fate would have it, the game was 3 hours old and just in the top of the 8th inning. Virginia had taken a 5-4 lead with three runs in the bottom of the 7th, so it’s on to 8th inning, where Miami scored three runs, but the top of the 8th inning lasted 24 minutes, so by the time Virginia came to bat in the bottom of the 8th, they knew this would be their final at-bat, because it was announced by the pa guy an inning early that no inning could start after 3:30pm. That was legal, agreed before the series started. UVA got runners to second and third, but could not tie it up. The clock struck 3:37 p.m., the game was over, called after eight innings. They say you see something different every time you see a game, and yes, stopping the game after eight was very different. After the game, it was back to Richmond, and sun soaked as well. It was a day that helped me relive all the good things about the game, and for at least a few hours, forget about steroids, and all the late night World Series playoff games. March 9, 2009 - The Petersburg High School basketball team, ranked number one in the state of Virginia, and still unbeaten at 30-0, will play the Bulldogs of King's Fork High School, in one of two state semi-final games at the Siegel Center in Richmond, at 9:00pm this Wednesday night. King's Fork has a very nice resume as well. The Bulldogs are 29-1 on the year, and have won 20 straight games. Petersburg and King's Fork have two common opponents coming into play on Wednesday, both played Booker T. Washington, with the Crimson Wave winning at Booker T. 62-49 back in late December of 2008. King's Fork beat Booker T. two times, by scores of 60-55 and 77-63 just last week. The other common opponent was Bethel, with Petersburg winning over the Bruins 64-57 on January the 17th at Virginia Wesleyan College, and King's Fork losing to Bethel 56-54 on December the 29th, 2008. Since that loss, King's Fork is on a 20 game win streak. Both Petersburg and King's Fork have four players averaging in double figures. More than any other team, King's Fork has a lot of height to match up with the Crimson Wave. According to Matthew Hatfield, from www.virginiapreps.com, Davontey Gardner is 6 foot 7 , close to 300 pounds, and he recorded a double double versus Booker T. of 25 and 10 in the eastern regional finals... Jay Copeland is a 6 foot 6 inch 250 pounder in the middle of that team. Guard Jamar Wertz has made 62 three point shots, while guard Jaquon Parker , the eastern region player of the year, had a triple- double versus Oscar Smith early in the year..this is a classic matchup of two of the very best state high school teams in Virginia. You can listen to the game live on Wednesday night on am 820, WGGM radio in the Petersburg-Richmond area, or listen on line at www.amen820.com, or www.TerrySisisky.com.
